The second half of Season 49 would’ve aired in the spring of 2016, after a gap of just over two months between Episodes 8 and 9. The biggest change between episodes was the addition of Bernard Cribbins’ name on the title sequence, as Hogan had now become a regular character and a companion.
THOSE WHO LEAD, PART II
Season 49, Episode 9
Written by JANE ESPENSON
Directed by RACHEL TALALAY
TX Date – 24 January 2015
Episode 9 picks up straight away and is a full on ‘the Doctor helps the rebels story’, however it mainly focuses around the moral dilemma of not being able to change history, as the Doctor knows the Gaians are defeated but in 30 years’ time, so there is nothing she can do, which causes tension with Hogan as he has fought to defeat the Gaians all of his life. Erin’s blindness is cured with help from the Captain of the Forge, Amanda Theodore, who Erin fights a battle with, against the Gaians. At the end of the story, Erin and Hogan leave with the Doctor, Hogan now a companion. THE LADY WITH THE LAMP
Season 49, Episode 10
Written by TOBY WHITHOUSE
Directed by METIN HÜSEYIN
TX Date – 31 January 2015
This episode sees the trio meet Florence Nightingale, during the Crimean War and they battle against the Yarra, a race who want to replace dead people with their souls. This episode, somewhat unfortunately for writer, Toby Whithouse, was met with large controversy due to its resolution of putting the Yarran souls into ‘non-sentient life’. The episode paints all animals, which aren’t humans, as not being sentient, which was wildly disputed, especially amongst Vegan activist groups, who considered the assessment to be wrong and cruel.
ONE GIANT LEAP
Season 49, Episode 11
Written by MATTHEW B. ROBERTS
Directed by RICHARD CLARK
TX Date – 7 February 2015
This episode sees the Doctor, Erin and Hogan travel to July 1969 and witness the Apollo landing, with a bit of trouble from the Drahvins – yes, those people from Galaxy 4 – as they want the titanium from NASA, as their planet doesn’t have it. It’s a bit of a silly plot, but that’s the point as it’s a fun run-a-round in 1960s Houston, with very 1960s villains. Also, the episode begins with a flashback showing Erin as a child watching the moon landing.
THE WATERS OF MARS
Season 49, Episode 12
Written by PHIL FORD
Directed by EUROS LYN
TX Date – 14 February 2015
This episode sees the Doctor, Erin and Hogan land on Bowie Base One in 2064, on Mars, where they know that the crew are doomed to die. The villain is the literal water on the planet, with a living entity inside, taking over the crew one by one, in basically, Terror of the Vervoid’s done right. However, the story becomes more of a tale about changing history, and it ends with Hogan actually changing history and stopping the crew from dying – however the Captain of the Base, Adelaide Brook, sacrifices herself, despite this, to keep history in order. Obviously, Hogan doing this, puts him on very bad terms with the Doctor by the end of the episode and the Doctor says she’s taking him home.
QUEEN OF NINE
Season 49, Episode 13
Written by TONI GRAPHIA
Directed by METIN HÜSEYIN
TX Date – 21 February 2015
At the start of the episode, the Doctor tries to take Hogan home to Gaian Earth but they are thrown off track and end up in the Tower of London in July 1553, during the reign of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Days Queen. Hogan here has to learn about changing history again (emphasised by the Doctor) as they have to let Lady Jane Grey’s fate play out, without interfering, and they instead just focus on making sure they are kind to her during her final hours. This story is a pure-historical, and the villain is just one of Queen Mary’s henchwomen.
REMNANTS
Season 49, Episode 14
Written by IRA STEVEN BEHR
Directed by NICK HURRAN
TX Date – 28 February 2015
This episode sees the Doctor try once again to take Hogan back to Gaian Earth, but she instead lands them on a star ship, which turns out to be one of the ships from the final episode of Panopticon. They find out that a deadly virus has infected the fleet and is killing everyone rapidly. Frances shows up and they work at that the virus only affects people with Time Lord DNA, so Hogan and Erin are sent to save the day. There they find a really old Zenla, who dies of the virus and at the end of the story they hold a funeral for her.
DESTINY OF THE GAIANS

TX Date – 7-14 March 2015
The finale, Episodes 15 and 16, Destiny of the Gaians, see the trio arrive back on Gaian Earth but in 3302, which is 5 years after Evil of the Gaians. Shenanigans ensues and in short, the Master saves Gemma’s life, from Cold Front’s Consequences, and changes the time line so she never killed herself, he pretends to be the Doctor and takes her as his companion. The Master all the while teams up with the Governor. The Doctor and her companions are all split off throughout the story, they briefly go to Peladon. There’s a massive epic battle at the end whereby Hogan finally gets to defeat the Gaians for good. Hogan leaves at the end and marries Captain Amanda Theodore (who’s now the same age as him as it’s the future) and the Master is arrest by Caitrin Ryan and locked in a UNIT cell, not before Caitrin whispers something mysterious in her ear.
